reading is rad

book counting is a thing, I’ve been doing it for decades. Jotting down titles and authors, and I don’t talk often enough how I get second-hand books so I can write on its pages.

I guess I’d have more than two friends on GoodReads only so if people still read as commonly as they used to, but it doesn’t matter as much now, since the two friends I read with are who tickles my brain the most.

You Can’t Teach a Love of Reading in a Classroom,” an opinion piece for The Guardsman

This year, my goal is to read about 100 pages a day. I had to be realistic and go down to 40 a day. that kind of self-awareness is what I have been working on for years, in action. I continue to read around 40 pages a day, at least, and sometimes I read a hundred. Not being pressured (even by myself) is a comfort-state i love to be in.

This whole thing is a smaller goal in my real life research on literacy, this project I’ve been slowly…just living in what I’ve not-very-cleverly named, “Reading is Rad” and wanted to name relieved to read. I’ve been testing myself by writing book reports (loved doing those in school, watching my reading book list grow by the week) and, even better, learning how to do book reviews since I’m now an adult who still loves to read, and needed somewhere to put them. so this “reading is rad” thing is it. “RIR,” if you may.

I’ve always thought people changed a lot when they grow up, but here I am still so similar to an eight-year-old-me kicking her heels back in bed, reading Harry Potter, then Anne of Green Gables, then The Face on the Milk Carton, esperanza rising, Quiet, Pretty Little Liars, city of thieves, the catcher in the rye, The Kite Runner, handmaid’s tale, now surrounding myself with margaret atwood, shakespeare, hemingway, kundera, and a bunch of translated-into-English novels from other places in the world. wanting to understand how they see the world, what they were experiencing then and with who, Then wanting so bad to be a writer so forcing hours of reading poetries from the local public library, trying to understand syntax and structure but mainly only learning feeling out of them.

Still. Still. I resonate most with wanting to be a simple scribe, I think, but, then again, I’d be a really good librarian.

currently, I am reading: didion and babitz and being leisurely about The razor’s edge, feeling really read by the two personifications of them.

I also listen to music when I read (or do anything), usually to this playlist, on Spotify.
